I was Weps from 10/87 to 10/88 when she was decommed. Did a great deployment with some great guys. I remember a nav brief when Capt. Glenn Berree asked the Electrical Officer ENS Rode if we would properly run the deguassing range entering port. Rode answered, "Gee, Captain, I've got a hundred things to do!" When steam issued from the CO's ears, ENS Kahler yelled, "Fire in the hole!" which made everyone laugh and probably saved Rode's life (ass). Great ship that steamed hard, played hard and loved to shoot. Great memories.

FTM3 1968-1969. Aboard when ship was hit in Missile Radar room by enemy fire. Lots of interesting memories. I was young, insubordinate and only wanted to get far far away from the USN. Now that I'm old and "wise" I would have done it a lot different, but I had a lot of fun, and managed to grow up somewhere along the way and went from hippie sailor to corporate manager. Former friends or enemies especially from 4th div are more than welcome to contact me.

Served in Wilson from 74-79.Lots of memories with the "1102" gang.I have a Wilson plaque over my fire place, engraved on the top brass plate is " Three Roses Bar, CPO Mess". The bottom plate reads, "Thanks for Table Tops". I talked the Momma San out of it on my last cruise in 84.Retired in 1991.

MMFN to MM3 mostly main control from 76 to 79. Had a great West Pac and yard period in Long Beach. Went on to retire as a Navy Diver and have persued that career into the Gulf of Mexico and now West Africa as a Diving Consultant to Exxonmobil.
That ship was the best I ever served on. Thank God for a staute of limitations.
If anybody knows Kit McArthurs or Dan Jamiesons where abouts pass it along.

What a great web site. And what memories it has ignited. I served aboard the "Hammerin' Hank" from 62 to 64, in the ET gang. Those were great times and great friends. Here's remembering some of the gang, Harold 'don't poke me in the chest' Simmons, Gary Scheel, Jerry Myer, "Rockford,Il" Roushey, Ken Vansant, "Army" Armstrong, Dale "the vulture" Meeks, Bob Pool,, god, how memory fails us. So...Here's a funny one...Anyone remember those damned bugle calls we used to have to play over the public address system when we were flagship ..you know..the ones for chow, payday, reveille, taps ..etc..ALL those annoying calls..Well , as an IC man I used to have make sure those got played..SO..on the day I left the vessel for the last time ..just before I left I placed the entire box of prerecorded tapes on top of ths 440volt, 400cycle bus in the incoming side of the IC switchboard...OH YEAH...YOU'RE WELCOME

I was plank owner Ens.(Asst Sup O). Called Busenlehner to wish Happy New Year and heard about reunion (w/much disappointment at not being notified). With 2,150,000 United frequent miles, I could have flown to whole crew first class. Almost died when I saw the 7 sunk at target practice last year. Another one of my old ships (USS SACRAMENTO) decom'd last Oct. Tough getting old! Charlie said another reunion planned for next year in Annapolis. Great since I live in DC and it will be just up the road from me. Would have loved to reminisce with CAPT Caney, Dallaire, Orzalli, Boyd, McConville and the rest of the plank owners. After 25 years (CAPT, Ret), still consider CAPT Caney to have been one of the most influential Naval Officers I have had the pleasure (and occasional displeasure) to serve with. Remember Ann Caney well and also "Screaming Jack Shanahan", (introduced me to martinis) and I still have not kicked the habit. The Wilson Wardoom and crew was one of the best.

I was part of the "Skeleton Crew." We lost the load on the same day a inspection team flew onboard off the coast of Pakistan. That was when the "Hammerin Hank" number was up. I was a sailor onboard her from 88 to 89. The last time I actually seen her afloat was when she was being towed to Hawaii, going underneath the Coronado Bridge in San Diego.

The Henry B. Wilson was lucky number 7 for me and 3 friends that you rescued on 10 Dec. 1979, after our 36' sloop "Gambit" was rolled by a rogue wave in a storm in the S. China Sea. Thanks to all who served, and especially BM2 Howie, the cox of the whaleboat lowered in heavy seas to come get us, and all the others present on that day!

Just discovered this site. My heart sank when I read the fate of the Henry B. She was a great ship, smooth lines, rode the seas well. I served on board from fall 73 to Jan 78. Machinist Mate, aft engine room mostly, a bit of A gang, a while as water (and assistant oil) king. I knew the ship well. I remember our West Pac cruises, 75 and 76-77. I have also read Ralph Wetterhaun's book, 'The Last Battle', excellent reading. After active duty, enlisted in reserves, returned to Kansas, became BT2, assigned USS Bagley (Topeka unit), attend KU, became Mechanical Engineer, married, 2 daughters, now senior engineer at local nuclear power plant, Reminiscing about the old times on the Pacific. And Howdy, Ken Reisinger MM2, I see your name in the guest book.

Served from 76-77 as a PN3, enjoyed the reunion and seeing those who also served on the ship, a great bunch of guys regardless of the different backgrounds and ages. Thanks for those that did all the hard work for the reunion.
I believe I was the last one on board the Wilson before it faded from the waves. I will send pictures of the ship and the article from the local paper as soon as I can. I just happended to see the ship on a business trip from Sacramento, CA to Santa Rosa, CA, in 2002. The ship was moored in Mare Island, CA and I went to investigate and bingo it was the Wilson.

Plankowner arrived at Defoe Shipbuilding on 9/14/60. Transferred 10/61 to USS Providence (CLG-6) as leading SO for a sonar installation. Also served aboard DLG-11, DDG-16, and DEG-4. Achieved LCDR (LDO) rank in 1978. Ended my career in the Iranian & Saudi Arabian FMS programs. In my 28 years of active service, I considered Capt. Caney to be the finest Commanding Officer I had ever served under, bar none. DDG-7 was a great ship (although DDG-16 would come in a close second) and I really missed the Wilson crew when I transferred. I was fortunate in that I kept letters that I wrote my folks, and other correspondence and papers from all the commands at which I was stationed. I started an autobiography so that my kids know who I really was. I'm on page 700 and have just reached 1980. The Navy was good to me, providing me a college education and to be assigned in an area where I met my wife (married 40 years). Thanks for great web site. Plan to attend the next reunion

Love the website! I was a GMM3, Tartar Div., on board from 1971 to 1973, including WesPac. Great to see names of the guys who made that a great time - Dietzman, Engel, Capt. Farnham, just to name a few. Brings back floods of memories.....all the motorcycle rides with Dietzman, Czerwinski, Craig, and others; Capt. Farnham's Russian hat; Seaman Dooley throwing the smoke grenade over the side during RefTra; watching a whole pallet of 5-inch rounds go into the drink during UnRep; standing on the pier when Mr. Gervin drove the ship into it......what great memories!!!!
I missed the reunion due to a previous commitment but hope to make the next one.

Happy 229th. Birthday - USN. I arrived in Long Beach in 1974 as a Seaman after dropping out of EW A school. I did some time in 1st Div., did some time with my favorite Canadian as an EWSN and then finally ended up in the mailroom and made PC3. Left the Hammerin' Hank in 76 and found my way to a VQ squadron in Guam and well I loved it so much that I stayed for 20 and retired in '93. Now I work for our vets at the VA in Denver. I loved the Wilson and the 20 years in the Navy! Hope to hear from anyone that remembers the years 74 - 76. Hey, wheres Steve Gelbach and many others?

I remember being seasick most of the time--can't say I miss the experience. The ship was the first, and last one, that I was ever on. My wife, me and our 2 children live in Texas. I was onboard 1974-76 in the EW department. I was on exchange from the Royal Canadian Navy, my rank was Master Seaman (E6) and have a lot of great memories of the evacuation of Phomn Phen and Saigon and the recovery of the Mayeguez. I served as an Army Helicopter pilot in the 2nd half of 1972. From Oct 6th to Oct 14th I flew 5 missions in support of a Naval Gunfire operation south of Chu Lia. On the 14th we received heavy Anti-aircraft fire and decided that it was not the place for a single aircraft to be any longer. I was then able to fly out to the ship, the USS Henry B. Wilson. After a couple of orbits it was clear I could not land but I was able to hover off the bow and a crewman (brave guy) handed up a line to my gunner. At the end of the line was a bucket with cold cokes, a couple candy bars and patches with the ships crests. I still have my crest from the USS Henry B. Wilson proudly displayed with my memorabilia. And by the way, you guys were great shots.

GOOD NAVAL SIMULATION
1. Buy a dumpster, paint it gray and live in it for 6 months.
2. Run all of the piping and wires inside your house on the outside of the walls.
3. Raise your bed to within 6 inches of the ceiling.
4. Have your mother-in-law write down everything she's going to do the following day, then have her make you stand in the back yard at 6am and read it to you.
5. Have the family vote on which movie to watch and then show a different one.
6. Sew back pockets to the front of your pants.
7. Install a fluorescent lamp under the coffee table and then get under it and read books.
8. Put lube oil in your humidifier and set it on high.
9. Perform a weekly disassembly and inspection of your lawnmower.
And last but not least:
10. Sleep on the shelf in your closet. Replace the closet door with a curtain. Have you wife whip open the curtains about 3 hours after you go to sleep. She should then shine a flashlight in your eyes and mumble "Sorry, wrong rack."

RDE1(AC)/RDEC(AC)/EWC(AC) served 69/70 First of a new breed (EW) to hit the Fleet. when I hit the ship all the Ops saw was an RD crow after a short battle with the Bupers i finally settled in with OE div and was a happy camper. The Magnificent 7 under command of hammerin' Hank Mustin was one of high lights of my Career. Actually, life Changing comes to mind. In 1970 was again Xferred back to Special Projects For A couple of Years then To Jouett DLG/CG-29 72/74, Turner Joy DD-951 74, MOTU-5 74/78 and finally back to Jouett for my Twilight Cruise

The greatest ship that ever got under way. Served Nov. 76 to Feb. 80 as Electrical and Fire Control Officer. To this day, the best memory I had of Henry B. was standing watch as OOD knowing that the crew on board was the finest group of sailors on the proudest Grey Hound in the world. I was an original crew member (Plank Owner) we put ship into commission at the Boston Naval Shipyard on December 8, 1960. The crew went to pre-commissioning school in Newport RI. 10 of us, for training were assigned to a picket ship on a ship out of Davisville, RI. We got our first tast of sea sickness on that ship. When we finally put the Wilson into commission and began sea trials everone one except the old SALTS were sick we made a couple of bucks to stand watch for those guys who couldn't make it. Good times. I started out on the "deck force" and later became a signalman/quatermaster. Capt. Caney was in command until he was promoted to full Captain. We had alot of first but the one that I remember most was the time I dropped a scrub brush down the number 2 stack steam relief "button" I spent all night with fish hooks trying to get it out, butf never made it. The bad part about the situation was were carrying an Admiral at the time and we were in Hawaii.see ya Bruce

Presently reading "The Last Battle" (the Mayaguez incident and the end of the Vietnam war) by Ralph Wetterhahn that I just happened to come across cheap (which has many Henry B. pics).
If I knew some people would be showing up at the reunion that I knew, I might attend, as it would give me a good excuse to go sailing. Brought my family to San Diego four years ago and gave them the whirlwind tour (mountains, desert, beaches, zoo, Sea World, and sailing for two 1/2 days) which they loved.
Presently install, train, support, and act in a consulting role for automated concrete batch plant computers throughout North America (mostly). Have worked with present company for over ten years. Previous work was in the international oil industry.
It would be great to be able to meet old friends, and also to get some autographs (in paperback) from people that were actually onboard during the Mayaguez Incident.

Ahoy there mateys! I served on the Hammerin Hank from 1/74-8/77. Assigned to #1 Fire Room. BT-2. Made two West Pacs, 1975: Operation Frequent Wind and Eagle Pull, recovery of the Mayaguez and crew off Koh Tang island. 1976: leisurely cruise. Favorite port, Burnie Tasmania, damn near stayed there with a gorgeous little "Bird" that turned me every which way but loose. "OH What A Night!" Those 43 months on the Wilson were life altering. I would do it all again, except for cleaning the fish heads and sh*t out of the bilges after Boiler repairs while in Subic. Or chippin paint with that pnumatic chipper or that little hand chipper. I loved being out at sea, especially when that boat got to rockin, like during a storm. Couldn't get into the head to piss. What with all those sick swabbies with their heads in the toilets! And all that puke sloshing around on the deck in the head, man what a sight! Hopin more of my old running mates show up to this shin dig. That would be a blast.

Having just read through the entire Crew Log, what memories came flooding back. Served on board from July 1962 until August 1965. Two WestPac cruises, many local to San Diego weekly excursions on the ship affectionately known as DDG-7X as in experimental as it seemed we were always heading out to try either new torpedoes or new missiles or some other thing. I still remember the group from the Naval Cooks that came from the Pentagon with all of the "new and improved chow". What an experience!! Still remember sitting in CIC with almost the whole OI Gang with 7 or 8 AKAI tape recorders all ganged together recording music from the turntable that one of us had purchased. Look forward to seeing a number of you at the reunion that I proudly served with. There are many who have gone to the last muster and they will be there in spirit. And so to the thrilling sounds of the Theme from the Magnificent Seven I bid you Smooth Seas, Fair Winds and Blue Skies. Roush ETR2

I served aboard the Hammerin Hank from 1977 - 1981. Reported aboard while she was in the yards @ Long Beach. Made 2 Wespacs on her and saw the world. She was the finest ship I ever served on and will always hold a special place in my heart. Retired from active duty in 1995 as a SM1(SW) and have kept an eye out for a reunion ever since. I plan on attending and hope to see alot of people that I served with. Wondering where the hell SMC COPHER & SMC KELLEY are at? I remember every inch of that ship like i was on it yesterday, its a permanent part of my memory and will always be with me. served on the henry b from 74 to 76 as an em3 an eventually an em2. i was known as dr. j because i was from philly (julius erving a big thing back then)and i could fix anything, coffee pots my specialty. two west pacs and a thousand sunrises and sunsets. who remembers the xo, who's constant one liner was "expedite"? how about the fight that broke out in the small boat back from liberty in chin hae. we nearly tipped it over into february korean waters. does anyone remember the night we went dead cold (no power) when anchored out in monteray bay because it was the mating season for squid? blocked up all the intakes. our fillipino brothers had a heyday though!

The Magnificent Seven rides again. Had a very nice meeting with George Batchelor in Ft. Lauderdale prior to a cruise in April. Happens to be oine of the many cruise liners he's worked on over the years and it was great seeing him and his girlfriend. Wish I looked as young as him and he's kept his hands in Ship repairs and management.

As a young 18yr old the H.B. Wilson was my 1st assignment. I served onboard from 74-79, I always say I grew up during this time. After 21yrs of service the H.B. Wilson is the "Best" ship I served on, my time onboard was very enjoyable. There will always be a special place in my heart for her.

I was on the Wilson from Feb. '72 to Sept. '75. I was an IC2 when I left the ship. Made the two Westpac Cruises in '72 and '74. The Wilson was my only duty station, I went through IC "A" School and spent the entire enlistment on the ship. I remember many good times and ports of call. I have not keeped track of anybody I worked with, but just now communicating with a few guys that were on the same time as myself. I am looking forward to the reunion this fall in San Diego. Though I cannot afford a $100.00 per night accomodations I will be attending some of the functions. Look forward to seeing some of you guys.

Herny B. Wilson was the first ship I served on. Since then I have seved on another 4 ships and still counting. Henry B. will always be the one I remember the most. I served on her from July 86 to Oct 89. I was one of the last one to leave Henry B Wilson as she was being towed out of San Diego Harbor in Oct 89. This is a great web site thanks for the memories.

Spent two weeks on the Wilson in Aug 72 when I was TDY to CTF77 coordinating Naval gunfire with USAF Airborne Battlefield Command and Control resources. Stood watch in aft engine room 1969/70. Served under Capt. "FLANK HANK" Henry Mustin, we traveled fast, even when pulling up to the pier.Served on two destroyer escorts, but by far ole'#7 was the best. I miss the days of steamin' with the snipes, Freddie Jackson, Mike Ward, Bill Bozarth, Murphy and all.

What a great website put together in memory of DDG-7 and her crews. Many thanks to all those involved in creating and maintaining this (PMS?). Geez, I hadn't even thought of that in years! The photos sure do conjure up many memories, the likes of which so many young people who never served could never imagine, but the kind of memories that enable us to readily identify with the young sailors currently serving aboard a new generation of destroyers. It is hard to believe that all these years have slipped by as they have. Remember how time moved when we were serving aboard her, especially after "Turn to. Commence ship's work", or when we were laying in our rack coloring in the next section in our "short-timer's calendar". It is good, though, to remember and reminisce. We worked hard, and we played hard those years of our youth. We should be proud of that, just as we should be proud of those currently serving. May God bless us all, and God bless the USA.

It was sad to find out the Wilson met her end and rests at the bottom of the ocean she patroled for so many years but on further thought thats probably how a fighting ship like the hammering hank should die, if she had to go.
